Periodontist Inspecting Gums

Treatment Types

Dental Implants

Dr. Rasmussen was the first doctor in the Tampa bay area to place dental implants. Dental implants are a solution to replace missing teeth without destroying adjacent teeth, such as is done with a bridge. Dental implants are also not susceptible to decay, providing a lasting solution to missing teeth.

Recession Treatment

Do you have teeth that are extremely sensitive, with root showing or gums receding? There are new solutions to this old problem. Now, periodontists are able to predictably cover recession without having to use tissue from the roof of your mouth. What this means to you is a less painful procedure with all of the predictability of conventional treatment.

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a progressive disease that causes loss of the supporting structures of the teeth - primarily bone. One of the keys in treatment of periodontal disease is early detection and treatment. The earliest form of the disease, known as gingivitis, is very treatable. Once the disease progresses into periodontitis, bone loss results and treatment needs to be more aggressive in order to eradicate bacteria and bacterial deposits on the teeth.

What is a Periodontist?

Periodontists are specialists in the treatment of gum disease, correction of recession (long tooth syndrome), placement of dental implants and rebuilding of lost bone. In addition to the four years of dental school, we spend an additional three years in an intensive residency program involving sedation training with anesthesiologists, development of a high degree of surgical skill, as well as working interactively with general dentists and other specialists and medical professionals. In addition to a highly rigorous training program, periodontists are also required to enter a Masters of Science program, complete and defend a thesis and publish research to be considered for graduation. In essence, periodontists spend a minimum of 11 years in training!

Why Choose a Periodontist?

The additional training beyond dental school involves treating many patients with the "best of the best" as teachers and professors. By working with a periodontist, you are ensured the most effective treatment for your condition, as we spend great deals of time practicing "evidence-based" treatment for our patients. There are certainly a number of treatment modalities available, from deep cleanings, surgery, laser therapy, etc. You should rely on the experience of somebody that has all tools available to them and can make the best solution to fit you - not a one-size-fits-all approach. You are unique and an individual - your treatment should be individual, as well.
